Biodiversity net gain initiative creating >850 biodiversity units for sale.
A landscape-scale scheme covering over 330 acres of the South Downs National Park.
Halnaker Hill Farm, near Chichester in West Sussex, started with a vision to restore a part of the South Downs. This area had been farmed intensively for over 50 years, depleting the soil and landscape of its nutrients, beauty and wildlife. Through regenerative agriculture and carefully designed conservation, Halnaker Hill Farm has created a thriving ecosystem that supports wildlife and soil health.
The scheme has generated over 850 biodiversity units, providing a variety of habitat types, making it one of UK’s largest BNG projects.
The site is registered with Natural England (ref. BGS-300625001) and secured through a s106 agreement with the South Downs National Park Authority, with biodiversity units available for immediate allocation to support your statutory and/or voluntary BNG requirements.
The project spans across two Natural Character Areas (NCAs), including South Downs National Park and South Coast Plain.
Developers can secure biodiversity units for the following habitat types:
- Grassland habitats of medium to high distinctiveness
- Scrub units of medium distinctiveness
- Woodland units of medium distinctiveness
- Individual trees of medium distinctiveness
- Pond (priority habitat) units of high distinctiveness
- Lowland calcareous grassland units of high distinctiveness
- Species-rich native hedgerow with trees units of high distinctiveness
Location
The 62 ha site is located approx. 200m north of Elstree, within the Hertsmere Borough Council.
